Lessons from Backpacking

Solo Backpacking isn't easy, but much more difficult is the job of packing your bag.

  • The less stuff you have, the easier it is to travel. One backpack literally holds all the gear you’ll ever need while travelling. So, prepping the backpack is the most essential thing. You have to carefully weigh in on each and every item that goes in your backpack and try to find the smallest and lightest substitute for your needs.

  • Is swinging your trip or planning it? It will rarely happen like you planned, or you’ll have to miss something you really want to see. On the other hand, swinging your trips can also put you in situations you would not like.

  • Plan and research the location you intend to visit ahead of time, and always consult multiple sources when searching, especially for trekking and camping destinations.

  • After reaching the area, always confirm and discuss your plans with multiple local sources. Much of the time, what you’ll find on the internet isn’t always updated.

  • Talk to the people beforehand who have visited the same destination as you and try to always understand the issues you may face from a traveller’s perspective.

  • Always try to find a travelling partner rather than go solo. Even when you are going solo, it is always advised to club your plan with fellow solo travellers.

  • Keep your stuff segregated in plastic bags (preferably big ones). This would solve two issues. Second, it will provide additional protection against rain and water. I personally use plastic bags that I get with blinkit orders.

  • Keep all your IDs in a Digilocker or xerox them. Never keep the originals with you.

  • Some Essential Backpack Items that I always carry

    • Raincoat/Poncho

    • Headlamp/Torch

    • Inflatable Pillow

    • Power Bank

    • Spare Phone

    • Water Bottle (Vacuum Steel is the best)

    • Lighter

    • Pocket Knife/Multi-tool

    • Medicine Pouch

    • Earphones

    • You will require a hard copy of the map of the location you are visiting.

    • Padlock

    • A Set of Basic Cutlery

    • Chocolates or emergency food stash

    • Wet Wipes

    • Sunscreen

    • Pocket Deodorant

    • A pair of slippers

    • 3in1 Charging Cable (USB to USB-C, Micro USB, and Lightning port)

    • Sunglasses

    • Quick dry towel

    • Cosmetics-wise, Whatever the bare minimum is that you are comfortable with, that is what you should carry.

    • Dress according to your needs and weather and carry the bare minimum that you are comfortable with.
